The Lowly Gents are an Alt-Rock band based out of Edmonton, Alberta. They feature Royce Mathew, Jordan Slator, Scott Robertson, Brett Jensen, and Gene Klenke. The Gents create a unique sound by blending the melodies and energy of Americana, Folk, Blues, Country, Rock, and Punk through a unique finger picking guitar style and a rhythmic low end. The Lowly Gents deliver a groovy rock sound that fills the room.
The Lowly Gents started their journey as a two-piece folk-rock band founded by guitarist and vocalist Royce Mathew, backed by drummer Brett Jensen. With Brett’s ability to create rhythmic patterns that compliment Royce’s finger picking guitar style, The Gents began writing new songs, such as Where I’ll Lay My Bones and Promiscuous Love. Building on Royce’s back catalogue, The Gents were quick to take to local stages. After a few shows, and with a growing setlist, Royce and Brett decided to search for a bass player to round out their sound. In early 2018, bassist and lyricist Scott Robertson joined the Gents. Scott’s lyrical contributions such as Ballad of a Lowly Gent, Oceans Apart, and Tsunami became key tracks to building the band’s debut album.
In the summer of 2022, The Lowly Gents were joined by multi-instrumentalist, owner, and producer at Aardfox Music, Jordan Slator. After an appearance at Edmonton Mountain Biking Fest in 2022, and opening shows for touring artists Carmanah, as well as Doug Paisley, The Gents took a break from the stage to sit down and finally record their debut album. Their final product, Blue Skies and Better Days features ten songs about travel, relationships, politics, and sharing drinks with friends. The albums sound is a gradual meld of all their varying influences into something they call “country-flavoured indie folk punk” and was described by Rhea March on CJSR Edmonton as “So unique and unusual” and “even Neil Youngish at times”.
Also featured on The Lowly Gents debut albums songs Forest and the Fool, Ethereal, and Tsunami, is the fifth and newest Gent, guitarist and vocalist Gene Klenke. Gene comes to The Gents from the band National Divide which also features Jordan and Scott. With the ability to deliver three-part harmonies alongside Royce and Jordan, Gene joined The Lowly Gents on stage for the first time at their album release party on November 10 2023. With nearly 20 original tracks ranging from the punk inspired Fears and Faults, to sea shanties like The Mountain, to love songs like Golden, The Gents bring an eclectic balance to every show. Be on the lookout for The Lowly Gents in 2024 as they take their songs from Blue Skies and Better Days to the stage.
